When I was small and growing up in Knutsford, our lives were punctuated by town events such as the Circus, May Day and the Fair, Christmas carols in the Square and the Lions’ Father Christmas sleigh.  Small town fare perhaps, but so exciting for us children.  Nowadays, things have become more sophisticated and Knutsford has been named in the top 50 Best Towns and Suburbs to Live by the Sunday Times for amongst other things, its vibrancy.  Well, I can tell you that it always was the best!

Setting aside nostalgia, we have lots of things to look forward to including Tom Kerridge’s gourmet event: Pub in the Park to be held at The Lambing Shed in September and of course, The Royal Cheshire Show in June and the wonderful RHS show at Tatton in July. These are, of course, two of the ‘biggies’ together with the Literature Festival and Beer Festival, the list is endless!  Something always seems to be happening here and regulars like the Makers Market add to the excitement.

It is sometimes difficult to ’hear’ the quieter side of Knutsford, its history and the regular, unsung week-in, week-out activities, often charitable, which go on and provide the warp and weft of this small town.

Just a thought …  why in this year, the commemoration of the suffragettes and votes for women, did we not make more of our home-grown heroine, Elizabeth Gaskell.  Her novels certainly provided part of the inspiration for the need for universal suffrage?  How about putting up her statue somewhere in this town?
